Boats Anchored Behind ReefThere were NO winds for the 32 mile trip from Los Roques to Las Aves, so the engines were on and it was a rocky trip and there were swells from the NE and SE. It also got VERY hot. The temps were in mid+ 90s. Yuck!

There are a whole series of anchorages along Aves De Barlovento. The first one is very easy to get in to, but as you proceed inward it gets more and more difficult. The water depth varies quickly between 40+ feet and 10-15 feet and the bottom is covered with coral making reading the depths much more problematic. Stormy Petrel claims that I found a new way through the reefs! We ended up anchoring in the most eastern anchorage in an attempt get some wind.

Boobies Fill the SkyThe Aves is named for all of the birds that inhabit the islands. And let me tell you it's an appropriate name. The island is lined with trees that are full of birds and do they make a racket! The skies are constantly filled with birds and the cruising guide suggests that you don't anchor too near the trees...

There are reefs everywhere here & the snorkeling is great. Lots of live coral and lots of fish. Plan to spend most of the time here in the water exploring.
