Ahoy from Great Stirrup Cay!
This is just a quick note to update people as to what our future travels will entail. I looked at the weather charts this AM and decided that we needed to get moving. It looked like we would have a window to move up the coast of the US, so instead of hanging out in the Berry Islands, we needed to get moving. Diane, from Unicorn, was anxious to get home, so it seemed like we all agreed. Instead of making a small jump to Market Fish Cay (which looks like a nice anchorage with a nice beach), we made the jump to Great Stirrup Cay.
We anchored at the northern tip of Great Harbour Cay, which is not an anchorage that I would suggest to anyone unless it's settled weather as there's not a lot of protection from swell from the E to the W. Luckily we're in that condition and we're enjoying a smooth night (that is until the wakes from the passing cruise ships and freighters come through).
Last night was a sad night as we said our good-byes to BJ, Diane and Bud. We've spent close to 3 months traveling with them and spending time daily with them. We ate, drank, laughed and got one another out of jams. We dove, fixed systems and had a lot of fun. Rarely do you have this kind of exposure to someone other than your spouse, but we got along great. They're wonderful people and we'll miss them a lot. And we'll miss Bud, their ferocious Pit Bull who will lick you to death and is affectionately known as Scar Face by me (due to his run-ins with brush) and Booboo by BJ. Believe me, we've traveled with a lot of people, and BJ and Diane were by far the easiest to travel with. We can only hope that we'll meet up again.
I'm having to revise what I wrote last night. We were going to stop at Freeport and then head to the US. We're currently underway from Great Stirrup and after looking at the weather we've decided to keep going straight to the US. A cold front will be crossing northern FL on Wednesday, so we want to get there before it arrives. We've got flat seas with a very light wind from the S, so we'll just motor onto the Gulf Stream and then go as far as we can tomorrow before pulling in. We may make it as far as Daytona.
