Guanaja: Wrap-up

016-26.400 N
085-53.400 W

Despite all of the initial problems, our stay at Guanaja turned out quite nice. Everyone knew who we were, or certainly knew of the dinghy theft, and when they met us expressed their sorrow for the loss. It seems that when the fishing fleet has been out of the water for a while the theft rate soars Nothing is safe. People have to remove their props from their outboards because they constantly get stolen. Policing seems to be a daytime activity, and despite a lot of lip service, nothing was ever found.

The "new" dinghy has been patched & now holds air! Yeah. My biggest problem was that the dinghy repair cement had hardened sufficiently that it wouldn't adhere to the Hyperlon. The tube was nice and plyable, so check yours and carry a spare unopened tube.

Mike, from Willmont Bay marine, who helped locate the replacement dinghy, let us tie up at their dock for several days. That was great as we had power and 24 hour security in the form of 3 dogs. It also gave me a nice place to work on the dinghy. We went over to Mike & Linda's house several times to relax, use the Internet, and watch TV! They were great folks.

We also moved the boat to the N leeward side of the island where it was beautiful and was supposed to be calmer. Unfortunately a freak low formed near Belize and moved NE towards Cuba causing the winds to switch out of the W for days. That made the anchorage rough, stirred up the water, and brought lots of rain with it. Diving was nice, but cloudy. Lots of turtles!

The anchorage had the potential of getting very rough if the winds went N, so we motored dead into the W wind/waves to Roatan on Thursday. We're anchored off of the Hole in the Wall bar with Street Legal & Windham, who we first met in the San Blas. Headed off diving in an hour or two.
