Ahoy from Long Sault Island, Ontario!
We departed Brockville after squeezing ourselves out of the our dock. Due to the large number of people from Quebec, the marina was completely full and we were packed like sardines. They tried to raft 3 go-fast boats in front of us, but the staff finally said no. Thankfully there was no wind, so I was able to slowly extract myself from the dock.
We had a nice motor here along the St. Lawrence river. We definitely began to see the industrial side of the river as large businesses who utilize the shipping capacity of the river and rail were peppered along the shore. We also had quite a bit of ship traffic, so we had to maintain a constant watch as it's amazing how fast they can come up on you.
We passed through our first St. Lawrence river lock yesterday. The Iroquois lock is purely for current control and doesn't up or down lock you. It's literally a pass-through lock where they close the lock door behind you and open the door in front of you. Unlike the extremely reasonably priced locks on the NY state canal system, these locks are $25 each, and we have 7 of them to go through. Today we'll go through 2 locks which are for up/down-locking.
We anchored behind Long Sault Island around mid-afternoon and enjoyed the beauty of the area. Sue was absolutely thrilled to have several Loons swim around the boat. We really enjoyed being away from docks and just hanging on the hook. But there's no Internet, so I can't post any of the video/photos.
We have heavy fog this morning (thank you GPS, Radar and fog horn) and we'll move another 40 miles and anchor in Lake Saint Francis.
