To bring folks up to date, Stormy Petrel decided to spend the next 5 months in Panama instead of heading to Guatamala, as they had convinced us to do. Ken's saving a few hundred in air fare back to Canada by flying out of Panama. Gee, thanks! Luckily there were a few boats which were headed along the same path, and we hooked up with one of them, Passion Too, who is owned by Frank and Lee. Unfortunately they were installing a new generator which got delayed by 3 weeks and pushed the schedule way back.
To make a long story short, the generator finally got installed a 4 days ago and we left for the San Andres islands, which Colombia, but are off of Nicaragua, 3 days ago. The forecast was for NE winds, but when we got out the winds were NNW, which was DIRECTLY on the nose. This is a 213 mile trip, with a W current, so we diverted to Portobelo, which is 20 miles E, and will give us a better wind angle. While in Portobelo, Frank discovered that he has a leak in a high pressure diesel line on his engine and had to go Panama City to get spare parts today. Luckily everything was available & he's ready to go tomorrow.
Digressing, let me say that Colon has to be one of the most decrepit cities that I've ever been in. Everything is falling apart. No maintenance is being done on anything. You can see that at one time the city was beautiful, but not any more. I didn't take any pictures because I refused to walk out the out yacht club with a camera as I was justifiably in fear of getting mugged and losing it. What's sad too is that you get used to the decay after a while and just accept it as normal. Sad. I was just really glad to leave.
